Trump impeachment inquiry, NATO summit, NASA-SpaceX launch: 5 things to know Wednesday

The House impeachment inquiry opens a new phase Wednesday as the Judiciary Committee holds a hearing aimed at deciding whether to recommend articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The hearing will focus on the constitutional grounds for impeachment, including the meaning of “high crimes and misdemeanors” for which a president could potentially be removed. The House Intelligence Committee has been examining claims that Trump tried to extract political favors from Ukraine in exchange for foreign aid. On Tuesday, the Intelligence committee adopted a report of its findings on a party-line vote of 13 to 9, compiled after weeks of open hearings and closed-door testimony.

World leaders formally meet Wednesday in London for NATO’s 70th anniversary, as President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron quarrel over the nature of the military alliance in a changing world and other subjects. On Tuesday Trump blasted Macron for saying NATO was experiencing “brain death.” In a further ratcheting up of tensions, the White House said it was considering imposing tariffs on up to $2.4 billion worth of French goods in response to that country’s new digital services tax targeting U.S. technology companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Google.

NASA and SpaceX are shooting for a Wednesday afternoon launch of a Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a resupply mission to the International Space Station. The spacecraft will carry science experiments, crew supplies and onboard hardware, NASA said. In one experiment, scientists will send genetically-engineered mice, as well as regular mice up to space to study muscle degradation in microgravity environments and learn how to prevent muscle and bone loss during spaceflight. Liftoff is set for 12:51 p.m. ET, weather permitting.

Billie Eilish, the teen pop rebel who has already achieved more than most artists do in their entire careers, will be the first recipient of the Apple Music Award for global artist of the year and will perform in a live-streamed concert at Apple’s campus in California on Wednesday. Apple announced Monday that Eilish’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” has been named album of the year. Eilish and her brother Finneas will also receive songwriter of the year honors. Lizzo has been named the breakthrough artist of the year. Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” is the company’s pick for song of the year.

Nearly a month after Aldi’s wine and beer Advent calendars sold out, the discount grocer will start selling the Sparkling Wine Countdown to the New Year calendar for $24.99 at participating stores. The new set includes seven mini bottles of sparkling wine to drink starting Christmas through New Year’s Eve. Although this isn’t an Advent calendar — which typically has 24 treats and is used to count down the days of Advent, the religious days leading up to Christmas — it’s expected to sell out just as fast as Aldi’s alcohol calendars did in early November. Not all Aldi stores sell wine, as some cities and states do not allow grocery stores to sell alcohol.
